The sector witnessed FDI of USD180 Mn in 2020 and another USD500 Mn in 2021, thereby taking the cumulative FDI in the sector to USD 4.8 Bn. In the Upstream segment, new exploration projects are under execution and the 2nd licensing round has also been initiated. Production facilities are being developed around the Lake Albert Region, viz. the Tilenga Development Project and the Kingfisher Project. In the downstream segment there is a plan for a refinery with process capability of 60,000 bbl/day along with 211 km product pipeline and the 1445 km long x 24” dia East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) from Hoima in Uganda to Tanga in Tanzania. The international oil companies operating in Uganda have been issuing EPC contracts and then there are further different tiers for subcontract opportunities. According to PAU projections, the Construction phase for these upstream projects is expected to last over 4 years, with over 100,000 people expected to be mobilized in the operations area during intense construction activity.

Against this backdrop, the PAU through its various programs, promotes and monitors employment, capacity building, enterprise development and transfer of technology. ECIL â€Ķ The Growth Story

Essar Constructions India Limited (ECIL) – the Indian arm of Essar Projects – was formed in May 2017 to pursue EPC Business interests in India and the subcontinent. As a relatively nascent company, ECIL began its slow yet steady growth journey.

Fully aware of the challenges and limitations, the strategy was to take baby-steps in strength areas, get a footing in the market and then explore wider opportunities. The first four years saw the Engineering Division of ECIL steadily making breakthroughs with established as well as new clients.
Concomitantly, the EPC Division was working steadfastly towards showcasing the inherent strengths & execution capabilities, rebuilding relationship with old clients and partners as well as connecting with new ones.

It was quite an uphill task to regain market confidence. To add to the challenges, the COVID -19 pandemic struck, causing a slow-down and deferring finalization of orders. As a result FY2020-21 saw a decrease in key financials (Order Book, Revenue and EBITDA). Nonetheless, considering the slowdown as a dip before take-off, team ECIL geared itself further and their persistence paid-off as enquiries for construction works began to flow in. Sheer confidence in their execution capabilities and competitive pricing paved the way for orders involving construction scope, while efficient projects delivery and customer satisfaction led to repeat orders and new breakthroughs for Engineering.

It’s been five years now and team ECIL has a growth story to be proud of â€Ķ

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Nitin Bhatt, CFO, ECIL, expressed, “Five years ago, ECIL started from scratch, but what we had with us was a very strong positive attitude, confidence in our capabilities and people with a will to rise!”

Proud of the team’s achievements, Mr. Sejal Jani, Head – Business Development, Tendering & Estimation, ECIL expressed, “It has been a teamwork, wherein each and every member has worked tirelessly – with a sense of ownership – to ensure that we grow and start scaling new heights! As we celebrate ECIL’s rise,we are fully aware that this is just the beginning and we have a long way to go.”
